“Serious” is a song by Duran Duran, released in October 1990 as the second single from their sixth studio album Liberty. It’s a melodic pop-rock track that leans more toward a mature, understated sound compared to the band’s flashy ’80s hits.

“Serious” explores the complexities of a romantic relationship, with themes of emotional depth and commitment. The chorus — “You’re getting serious / As serious as a heart attack” — plays with light irony, but the overall tone is sincere, focusing on the push and pull of love and emotional vulnerability.

Itt features a tight rhythm section, crisp guitar lines, and Simon Le Bon’s smooth vocal delivery. The production is polished yet more organic than their earlier synth-heavy work, reflecting the band’s attempt to evolve into a more mature pop-rock direction during the early ’90s.

Despite being critically appreciated by fans and seen as one of the stronger tracks on Liberty, “Serious” was a commercial disappointment, partly due to limited promotion and internal changes within the band. It only reached No. 48 on the UK Singles Chart and failed to chart in the U.S. however peaked at number 6 in Japan and 7 in Italy
